Castle Road continues to shine as one of Southsea’s most distinctive destinations, as transformation works progress to make the street safer, greener, and even more welcoming for residents and visitors alike.
Led by Portsmouth City Council, the Castle Road improvements are part of a wider vision to strengthen local business areas and create places where people can relax, shop, and enjoy Portsmouth’s unique independent spirit. The project is now taking a short festive pause and will resume in the new year.
Pedestrianised in 2020, Castle Road has grown into a thriving hub of independent shops, cafés, and creative businesses. The current works build on that success by introducing a level paved surface with a clearly defined central pathway, improving accessibility and safety for everyone.
New planters and trees are also being added, bringing greenery and charm to the street while discreetly supporting sustainable drainage – a thoughtful blend of beauty and practicality.
Almost 70 metres of Castle Road have already been upgraded with stylish block paving leading towards Cecil Grove. Two raised beds with conservation kerbs are complete, with tree and shrub planting scheduled for early 2026. The different coloured bricks you may notice along the road mark the locations of future raised planting beds.
Access to Castle Road remains easy throughout the works. Shops are open as usual, residents and deliveries continue uninterrupted, and the updated Stagecoach number 18 bus route makes visiting even more convenient.
The scheme, delivered by Colas Limited, follows extensive public consultation earlier this year. Castle Road plays a key role in the council’s District Local Town Centre programme, which is designed to support vibrant, welcoming neighbourhood spaces for everyone.
Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council with responsibility for Culture, shared:
“Castle Road is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision. This is a place for everyone in Portsmouth to enjoy, explore, and get creative. We’re grateful for everyone’s patience while the works are carried out – Portsmouth will gain a hidden gem for 2026.”
Independent businesses along Castle Road are already seeing the positive impact.
Annie Flitcroft of Annie Flitcroft Ceramics, a recent arrival to the street, said:
“We’ve felt so welcomed into the community as a relocating business. Chewie already knows where to find dog treats and loves greeting friends on walks to Southsea Common. We’re excited for the added greenery coming next year – it will look fabulous in the spring.”
Belinda Delaney of the recently refurbished Delaneys added:
“The upgrades are really adding to the café culture that has blossomed over the last five years. This is a safe space for alfresco eating and drinking all year round, and a great place to people-watch, unwind, and enjoy a quiet coffee.”
As the works continue into the new year, Castle Road is firmly on track to become one of Portsmouth’s hidden gems – a place where creativity, community, and independent business truly meet.
